Whatever your baby decides to do in life, a healthy mind will be one of his or her greatest gifts.
That's where Omvits Omega-3 can help. We know that getting enough omega-3 is important for your growing baby, especially in the first two years. Studies have shown that increased maternal intake of omega-3 can:
✓ Increase birth weight1
✓ Reduce risk of early delivery1
✓ Reduce risk of auto-immune diseases such as type-1 diabetes and eczema2
✓ Increase attention span5
✓ Increase intelligence6
✓ Reduce behavioural problems7
But it's not always easy. Omvits Omega-3 gives you the peace-of-mind that your baby is getting the brain-building benefits of omega-3, giving them the best start in life.
Fish are one of the most common sources of omega-3. However, eating fish can be a risky choice - especially during pregnancy.
That's because the oceans are more polluted than they have ever been. As a result, much of our fish and seafood is now contaminated with Mercury and other nasty toxins.
Omvits Omega-3 is made from algae grown in purified water (not taken from the sea), giving you the peace-of-mind that your omega-3 contains:
✓ No heavy metals
✓ No PCBs
✓ No dioxins
✓ No micro-plastics
Just pure, clean and plant-based omega-3...
Humans need omega-3 fats for healthy brain, eye and nervous system development. The human body isn’t capable of producing omega-3 on its own, making it important that a growing baby gets the proper amount during pregnancy and early childhood.
But did you know that most prenatal vitamins don't contain omega-3? At a time when the need for omega-3 is greater than ever before, it's important to include a dietary source of omega-3 DHA specifically.
Omvits is a convenient way of getting a clean, plant-based source of DHA, ensuring mum and baby are getting all the benefits.
Pregnancy can be a scary time! You're trying to get used to the changes in your body and what your new life as a mum will look like. You want to do the best you can for your growing baby, but it's not always clear how.
That's why it's so reassuring to hear from other mums who have been where you are.
So we asked some of our amazing customers to tell us about their experiences using Omvits Omega-3 during pregnancy...
"I panicked a little when I was reading about how essential DHA is for a developing foetus.
The idea of just eating fish again crossed my mind but the thought of actually doing it repulsed me so I was in a bit of a pickle but these have saved me! Thanks, Omvits!"
Love that they are from an algae source ever since I’ve heard this is where fish get it in the first place.
My baby is developing well, bright-eyed and happy :)
"These are fab! I’m a wimp when it comes to swallowing tablets but these are a good size, soft and so easy to swallow. I had been looking for something which was vegan and suitable for pregnancy and these tick both of those boxes!
Hopefully, our little one will come out a brain box now!"
"Really pleased with these supplements, I was looking for a fish-free omega 3 supplement suitable for pregnancy and found these.
They literally have no taste (perfect for morning sickness) and are small in size so are easy to swallow. I will be using these throughout my pregnancy and beyond as I am so pleased with them."
At a time when you may be experiencing nausea or feeling tired all the time, it can be hard to ensure you're eating a balanced diet. Eating the recommended two portions of fish may be the last thing on your mind!
But, you don't need to worry about eating fish if you don't want to. Just take two capsules daily alongside your prenatal vitamin and you're done.
The capsules are soft, small, easy to swallow and tasteless, so they won't make your nausea even worse.
What's more, unlike normal fish oil capsules, our algae-based capsules won't repeat on you and cause those awful fishy burps!
* for legal reasons, we only advertise 200 mg per capsule, as this is the minimum we promise. However, in reality, each capsule contains approx 220-230 mg of DHA per capsule.
We've taken special care to ensure that all our packaging does minimal damage to the planet.
✓ Plastic-free - Our cartons and inner pouches are paper-based whilst still protecting the contents and keeping your capsules fresh
✓ Recyclable - Unlike plastic alternatives, our packaging can be fully recycled in as part of your normal paper recycling

✓ Fully recyclable, responsibly sourced and forestry commissioned postage materials with zero plastic
You've probably heard that oily fish are a rich source of omega-3. But did you know that fish don't actually make omega-3 themselves? They get it from the algae they eat.
Algae is the original source of omega-3 in the sea. What's more, we can extract the omega-3 directly from the algae, leaving the fish out of the process altogether.
Our algae is grown in purified water and not taken it from the sea. By doing this, we not only avoid disrupting the delicate marine eco-systems, but we also avoid the harmful contaminants found in our polluted oceans.
So why bother with the fish when you can get the same goodness directly from the source, without damaging the oceans?
You might be thinking, "I'll just take a fish oil supplement." But you should know: Fish oil is a byproduct of industrial fishing, which destroys our oceans. Plus, it's been found that fish oil can actually make some women's prenatal issues worse - like heartburn or nausea.
Not only that, but fish oil comes with the risk of Mercury contamination, which can be harmful to your growing baby.
To meet the world's demand for cheap omega-3, industrial fishing fleets often employ the most destructive fishing practices. Here are some alarming facts about the industrial fishing industry:
At the current rate, the worlds fish stocks may collapse by the year 2048
The global fishing fleet is 2-3 times larger than what the oceans can sustainably support. More fish are taken out of the ocean than can be replaced
An estimated 300,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises die in fishing nets every year
Algae, on the other hand, contributes to none of these issues and is a far better choice for the health of our oceans.
We owe it to our children to help preserve the planet by making eco-friendly choices whenever possible.
1. What are the benefits of Omega-3?
Omega-3 plays a role in cells throughout the entire body and can therefore produce numerous benefits.
It's best known for heart, brain, and eye health. It is also a crucial nutrient for pregnant and breastfeeding women as it plays a role in the development of the growing baby.
Omega-3 also promotes an anti-inflammatory response in the body, helping to defend against many inflammatory diseases.
Benefits which have been noted by our customers include:
In terms of benefits for mum and baby during pregnancy:
2. How do I know Omvits Omega-3 is safe to consume?
Our Omega-3 is created with safety and quality as the top priority. Our manufacturing is certified to meet GMP, BRC Global Food Safety and ISO 9001:2015 standards.
Each batch is independently tested for heavy metals and microbes. Our formulation is 100% GMO-free, and free of the most common allergens including fish, wheat, gluten, crustaceans, eggs, nuts, soy and dairy.
We are also transparent about our ingredients to ensure your peace of mind.
3. What are the ingredients?
100% Vegan Algal Oil 40% DHA (alga schizochytrium sp.), modified corn starch (non-GMO), firming agent: glycerol, gelling agent: undegraded carrageenan from red seaweed, acidity regulator: disodium phosphate, antioxidant: vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate), vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate).

Doesn't contain: fish, wheat, gluten, crustaceans, eggs, nuts, soya, dairy, animal products, heavy metals, microbes, artificial flavourings and preservatives, GMOs.
4. Is Omvits Omega-3 suitable for children?
Absolutely! In fact, Omega-3 is an extremely important nutrient for a growing child due to its role in brain function and development.
The capsules are suitable for children over the age of two and are soft and small in size. This makes them easy-to-swallow, especially for children. We don't explicitly state this on the packaging, as some children have trouble swallowing capsules, so we leave it to the parents' discretion.
If a child does have difficulty swallowing capsules, the capsules can also be pierced and the contents squeezed into a drink.
As with any health supplement, you should always consult a doctor or paediatrician first.
5. Is Omvits Omega-3 safe to use during pregnancy?
Yes, absolutely. In fact, pregnant and breastfeeding women are likely to get the most benefit from our Omega-3. In addition to a normal daily intake of Omega-3, pregnant women require an additional boost of DHA for the normal development of the brain and eyes of their growing baby.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA/EPA per day for an average adult, with an additional 200 mg of DHA per day for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Studies have shown numerous benefits of DHA intake for the health of both mother and baby.
As with any health supplement, you should always consult a doctor first.
6. How is Omvits Omega-3 different to other sources of plant-based omega-3?
Non-fish omega-3 supplements derived from seeds (usually Flaxseed) have been around for a while, but there's no comparison when it comes to effectiveness.
Not all omega-3s are created equal. Without getting into the science too much, there are three main types of omega-3: ALA, DHA and EPA.
Supplements derived from seeds are rich in ALA, but contain no DHA or EPA. Although ALA is good for your health, it is far less effective than DHA and EPA, which are responsible for the majority of the health benefits associated with Omega-3. Your body can convert some of the ALA into DHA and EPA, but not nearly enough for optimal health.
Omvits Omega-3 is rich in DHA, which is the most important type during pregnancy.
This makes it a superior option to seed oils to meet your daily Omega-3 requirements.
7. I'm not vegan or vegetarian. Is Omvits Omega-3 right for me?
Omvits Omega-3 is great for anybody looking for a clean source of omega-3 - not just vegans! The absence of heavy metals makes it a perfect choice during pregnancy, as the Mercury found in fish-based sources could harm a growing baby.
Furthermore, anybody who is concerned about the future of our planet should be concerned about the impact of the commercial fishing industry on the oceans.
With our oceans currently being heavily overfished, combined with the world's growing population, fish is simply not a sustainable way to meet the world's growing demand for omega-3.
Algae is the omega-3 source of the future, whether you're veggie, vegan or neither!
8. How do I take Omvits Omega-3?
Our Omega-3 softgels capsules should be swallowed whole with water and after a meal (ideally your fattiest meal of the day).
To make this convenient during pregnancy, you can take 2-3 capsules alongside your prenatal multivitamin.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommend that pregnant and breastfeeding women obtain 450 mg of omega-3 per day. Two capsules of Omvits Omega-3 will deliver 445-450* mg of DHA and would meet the needs of most women (as some omega-3 would be obtained from the diet). You may choose to opt for three capsules (delivering 600-670 mg of DHA) if you are unsure whether you are getting any omega-3 in your diet.
You can also pierce the capsules and squeeze the oil out if administering to young children.
* for legal reasons, we only advertise 200 mg per capsule, as this is the minimum we promise. However, in reality, each capsule contains approx 220-230 mg of DHA per capsule.
9. Does Omvits Omega-3 have a guarantee?
Absolutely! We want you to be happy using our products, so we created the "Omvits® 90-day Happiness Guarantee" to give you plenty of time to try out your supplements.
If you’re unhappy for any reason, just drop us an email, return what’s left and we’ll process your refund. Simple.
10. Does Omvits Omega-3 contain EPA?
Our original Omega-3 product is DHA only. The main reasons for taking this approach were value-for-money, capsule size and the fact that DHA is the real powerhouse of the Omega-3 family and is the one that's particularly important for pregnant women.
We thought it would be better to offer a really good dose of DHA in a small capsule, rather than increase the price and size of the capsules just to squeeze in a small amount of EPA.
Having said that, our Omega-3 Plus product is a great option for those customers who do want the extra EPA.
DHA is the most difficult Omega-3 for the body to produce, which is why it is particularly beneficial in supplement form. Although EPA is certainly an important Omega-3, studies have shown that people with a balanced diet rich in DHA can produce enough EPA naturally.
Based on our research, we think a high-quality DHA supplement is the best value for money for most people, but we've introduced an option for people who specifically wanted the extra dose of EPA.
11. Is Omvits Omega-3 allergen free?
Our Omega-3 is free of the most common allergens including fish, wheat, gluten, crustaceans, eggs, nuts, soya, dairy and artificial flavourings and preservatives.
12. How much Vitamin E content is there per capsule?
Each capsule contains a maximum of 2.14 mg of Vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant to protect the oil.
This is well below the safe limits for pregnancy.
13. Does Omvits Omega-3 contain Omega-6?
No this does not contain Omega-6. Although Omega-6 is an important fatty acid, the modern diet is very rich in Omega-6. In fact, most people consume far too much, to the point that it is affecting our health.
The ideal ratio of Omega 3 to 6 in the diet is 1:1, while in reality it is closer to 1:20 in the western world.
For this reason, we did not include any Omega-6 in our products as there is little health benefit to supplementing with it.
In most cases, it's far better to increase your Omega-3 and reduce your Omega-6.
14. Isn't an Omega 3-6-9 supplement better value than Omega-3 alone?
You may think that a supplement which contains Omega 6 and 9, as well as Omega-3, is a better choice than Omega-3 on its own.
However, most of us already get plenty of Omega-6 from the foods we eat. In fact, we are eating so much Omega-6, that it is having a negative effect on our health by causing inflammation.
By taking a supplement with added Omega-6, you could be damaging your health further. As for Omega-9, this is not required in our diet at all. Omega-9 is a “non-essential” fatty acid, as it can be created by the body from other nutrients.
It's far better to get a high-quality Omega-3 supplement, especially during pregnancy.
15. What is the difference between Omega-3 and DHA?
Omega-3 is the name given to a family of “good fats” that the body needs in the diet and there are many different types. DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) is one of the fats in the family and provides most of the benefits of Omega-3. It's the main fatty acid responsible for foetal development.
It’s also the most difficult to get from your diet, which is why it’s particularly beneficial as a convenient supplement.
16. How is your algae extracted? Is there any use of Hexane or any other solvents in the extraction process?
Schizochytrium is a strain of algae found in coastal marine habitats and is naturally rich in Omega-3 DHA. These algae are cultivated in a sterilised environment and then fermented in vats of purified water.
This not only prevents impacts on natural ecosystems but also avoids the risk of any pollutants or contaminants from seawater. During this process, the algae synthesise the DHA-rich oil which is then extracted using a solvent-free process.
The extracted oil is then treated and mixed with Vitamin E to prevent oxidation, after which it is ready to be filled into our veggie softgels.
Obviously, there's a lot more to the process, but this provides a basic overview.
17. What is the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for Omega-3?
There is no official standard for how much Omega-3 we should get each day. However, most health organisations agree that 250–500 mg per day is sufficient to maintain good overall health.
One such organisation is the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), who recommends the following:
Adults:
- 250 mg DHA or EPA per day for normal adults
Pregnant/breastfeeding women:
- 200 mg DHA per day in addition to normal adult requirements (450 mg total).
Children (7-24 months):
- 100 mg DHA per day
Children (2-18 years):
- 250 mg DHA or EPA per day
Two capsules of Omvits Omega-3 will deliver 440-450* mg of DHA and would meet the needs of most women (as some omega-3 would be obtained from the diet). You may choose to opt for three capsules (delivering 600-670 mg of DHA) if you are unsure whether you are getting any omega-3 in your diet.
18. Why is Omvits Omega-3 better than fish oil?
There is no doubt that fish oil has some health benefits, however, there are also well-documented downsides. If you are considering buying fish oil, here are a few things to bear in mind:
1) Many fish oils are cheap, but you should be aware of what you are paying for. These cheap fish oils are regularly of poor quality and contain relatively small dosages of DHA/EPA. They often have not been properly processed to remove heavy metals and toxins. You'll also find that they have a very strong "fishy" smell or taste. This is because the oil is starting to go rancid as the polyunsaturated fats start to go bad. This would be horrible for morning sickness!
2) If you saw how fish oil is made, you probably wouldn't want to put it in your body! Fish scraps are mashed, steamed and squeezed to get the oil out before it goes through further processing.
3) Our seas are more polluted now than they have ever been. Fish often contain harmful levels of contaminants and toxins including heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins which can be harmful to you and your baby.
4) There are major concerns about the impact of overfishing on world fish stocks. According to the United Nations, world fish stocks are expected to collapse by the year 2048 if current practices continue. Algae, on the other hand, is fully sustainable and a great alternative to fish oil for vegans and non-vegans alike.
5) Fish is a highly inefficient way of getting Omega-3 in comparison to algae. Pound-for-pound, algae contains approximately twenty times the amount of Omega-3 as fish. In other words, for every 20 kilograms of fish taken out of the ocean, you'd only need 1 kilogram of algae to produce the same amount of Omega-3!
19. I’m not vegan but prefer eco-friendly options. Is Omvits Omega 3 as good as fish oil?
First of all, well done for trying to opt for the sustainable option!
The reason why fish are rich in Omega-3 in the first place is because they eat algae. We use the same type of algae to create Omvits Omega-3.
This way, you can get the same bioavailable form of Omega-3 directly from the source, but without the fish, toxins and pollutants!
Unlike seed-based Omega-3 supplements, the type of Omega-3 found in algae (DHA) is the same as that found in fish and krill... Just without the middleman!
20. How does Omvits Omega-3 compare to cod liver oil?
As a source of Omega-3, algae oil is far superior. Cod liver oil has a slightly different composition as it contains small amounts of vitamins A and D.
However, it generally contains lower concentrations of Omega-3 and not enough vitamin D to meet the average person's requirements. Vitamin A is easy to get from your diet with fruit and veg.
In addition, the liver of fish is where all the sea-borne toxins and heavy metals accumulate. Cod liver oil can contain these nasties, which you definitely do not want in your body.
Cod liver oil should be avoided by pregnant women for this reason.
21. How do I know this algae is free from Mercury and other heavy metals which also contaminate fish?
Our algae is grown in a closed system in purified water and not taken from the sea.
Not only does this mean that the algae is completely free of ocean-borne contaminants, it also doesn't disrupt the delicate marine ecosystems.
