Omvits is a UK-based vitamin and supplements company dedicated to using clean, natural and innovative ingredients to create high-quality products which are sustainable for the future. We completely understand the importance of health and nutrition in order to lead fulfilling lives, but it doesn't need to be at the expense of the planet and the environment.
The team at Omvits came together through a shared challenge we all faced: living a healthy lifestyle in a sustainable way.
While researching the many benefits of a plant-based diet, it was clear that eating a varied diet with lots of fruits and veggies provides almost everything you need to be healthy. However, our research showed that there were a few nutrients which are commonly lacking in the modern diet - and not just in vegan and vegetarian diets.
One of these deficiencies is Omega-3 - an important polyunsaturated fatty acid usually found in fish.
For many years, fish or cod liver oil supplements have been the most common way for people to get their Omega-3, but our research into the fishing industry revealed some startling statistics...
- UN Food & Agriculture Organization
- World Wildlife Fund
- World Wildlife Fund
As lovers of the oceans and marine wildlife, we thought that these statistics were outrageous and refused to believe there wasn't a better way for people to get Omega-3 into their diets without exploiting the world's oceans. The solution was out there - we just had to find it and make it accessible... and so Omvits was born!
Whether you believe the statistics above or not, the world's population is growing and the demand for nutrients like Omega-3 is increasing year-by-year. The planet cannot afford to continue meeting this demand with animal-based products and as a result, millions of people around the world are moving towards vegan and plant-based diets.
We’re here to support these people, whilst challenging unsustainable and destructive industries. We're starting by taking on the fish oil industry with our algae-based Omega-3!
We'll only develop products which people actually need and have scientifically proven health benefits. We believe that most of our nutrients should come from our food - Omvits is just here to fill in the gaps.
We'll do the research and ensure that our products contain nutrients in their most effective and bio-available form - as close as possible to how they're found in nature and better than the animal-based alternatives!
We believe that animal-based products are not sustainable for the future. All our products will be 100% vegan from sustainable sources and we'll select environmentally-friendly materials for our packaging.
Whether we're considering a product, looking for ingredients or meeting a supplier, there are a set of principles that we will always consider before making any decisions...
Why does it matter?
Millions of people around the world are moving towards vegetarian and vegan diets, or simply trying to reduce the amount of animal products they consume.
Aside from the animal cruelty issues, It's one of the best ways to reduce our environmental impact. We want to support anyone already on a plant-based diet or making the transition.
What have we done so far?
We've ensured that all of our products will always be 100% vegan with no hidden animal products. We check every last ingredient and have recently become Vegan Society registered.
How can we improve?
We're constantly looking for plant-based alternatives to ingredients that are traditionally animal-sourced. We're sure that there are plenty more that we haven't discovered yet!
Why does it matter?
We expect a certain level of quality from the products our families consume, so why would we expect any less from our customers?
What have we done so far?
We've ensured that all our products are manufactured to globally recognised standards and every batch is independently tested for quality and purity.
How can we improve?
We're keeping a close eye on breakthroughs in the industry, so we can continuously improve our products with better ingredients, packaging or processes.
Why does it matter?
Being conscious of the environment isn't just about the product itself, but also the packaging that we use.
What have we done?
Our bottles are currently made from PET plastic which has an excellent eco-profile regarding greenhouse emissions and energy use. It is also fully recyclable and the label is made from biodegradable cane fibre, which is a waste product from sugar production.
In addition, we've recently introduced foil refill pouches, which contain 75% less plastic than a bottle. This is also fully recyclable and an effort to encourage our repeat customers to reuse their plastic bottles.
What's next?
We want to get as close to zero-plastic as we possibly can. In order to achieve this, we are currently looking at alternative forms of packaging for our products as well as for shipping materials.
Why does it matter?
We think that sustainable, plant-based alternatives will never make an impact in the world unless people are able to afford them. When searching for an algae-based Omega-3 for ourselves, we found most to be very expensive.
What have we done so far?
We've priced our premium algae-based Omega-3 at a non-premium price.
How can we improve?
We've got some exciting products coming soon and we'll be offering the same premium quality at a fair price.
Why does it matter?
Whether it's a supplier, customer or competitor, we believe that everyone deserves a certain level of respect when dealing with Omvits.
What have we done so far?
We've made sure that every email or review that we receive is read by at least one member of the founding team and responded to personally. We also have great relationships with all our suppliers and have gone out of our way to meet them personally.
How can we improve?
We want to make better use of the power of social media to connect more closely with our customers and supporters. Come and follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!
Why does it matter?
"No one can do everything, but everyone can do something." - Max Lucado
There are many causes that we care about, so it's important that we make a contribution wherever we can - however small it may be.
What have we done so far?
Malnutrition is the #1 cause of preventable child deaths. We've partnered with the charity Vitamin Angels to support them in bringing life-saving vitamins to at-risk populations around the world.
How can we improve?
We set ourselves a target to provide vitamins to 1000 children through Vitamin Angels in 2018, which we achieved. In 2019, we raised this to 10,000 children, which is an achievement we're very proud of. We have even more ambitious goals for 2020.
